Debate Club: White Sox or Guardians, Game 5

Study Hall Debate Club, playoff edition. Bev argues the White Sox, Tommy argues the Guardians, and Ethan and Rich vote with real moneylines before ALDS Game 5.

Mr. Degen here, moderating. The series is tied 2-2, Game 5 is Sat, Oct 10, 5:00 PM PT at Progressive Field, and the winner gets the Rays. I asked for two volunteers to argue it. Four hands went up, which is how I know nobody read the rules.

The rules: Bev takes the White Sox, Tommy takes the Guardians. Each gets up to three picks on their side. Ethan and Rich judge, and a judge's vote is a moneyline on the side that won the debate. Everything counts. Talk is cheap. Ballots cost money.

Bev: the White Sox already won there

Bev, opening statement.

"Everyone keeps saying Cleveland has the momentum. Momentum was in Chicago two days ago, and look where it went. Here's what I know. The White Sox won Game 1 at Progressive Field 3-0, per MLB.com. Then they won Game 2 there 4-3, behind Sean Burke, who gave up one hit, per MLB.com. Burke pitches Saturday. Same mound. Same building.

"And has anyone looked at Cleveland's bullpen lately? Their top relievers have pitched in every game of this series. I'm not saying they're tired. I'm saying they've been very busy, and I've seen this episode before."

Bev's picks:

  • Chicago White Sox moneyline, +123 at STN Sports, 1.5u. Her strongest angle of the series.
  • Chicago White Sox +1.5, -185 at STN Sports, 1u. Both games in Cleveland were a shutout and a one-run game.

Tommy: the bats woke up

Tommy, rebuttal.

"Respectfully, Bev is reading last week's notebook. I have this week's. Cleveland scored three runs in Games 1 and 2 combined. Then 18 in Games 3 and 4. In Game 3, Guardians pitchers struck out Chicago 19 times, per MLB.com. In Game 2, Gavin Williams struck out 11 by himself. He starts Saturday.

"So I've got three things pointing the same way: the offense is hot, the strikeouts keep showing up, and they're home. When three of my notebooks agree, I listen. The run line is my longer, louder ticket."

Tommy's picks:

  • Cleveland Guardians moneyline, -137 at Caesars, 1.3u. Three trends agree.
  • Cleveland Guardians -1.5, +160 at Caesars, 0.5u. The last two wins were by 6 and 4.
  • Over 7, -112 at Caesars, 0.5u. 26 runs in the last two games, combined.

The ballots

Ethan, your vote.

"Bev's argument wins, and not because it was louder. Tommy's trends are real, but everybody can see them, and the price already includes them. Chicago at a plus price, after winning twice in that park last week, is the side I'd rather pay for. I'm not saying Cleveland is bad. I'm saying I'm being paid fairly to disagree."

  • Ethan: Chicago White Sox moneyline, +123 at STN Sports, 0.8u.

Rich, your vote.

"Tommy's. The home team, the team that won the last two, and the shorter odds. Bev made a very interesting case about last week. I'm betting on this week."

  • Rich: Cleveland Guardians moneyline, -137 at Caesars, 0.75u.

The moderator rules

One ballot each. A split decision, which means I break it.

Two good arguments, one game. I'm keeping my pen in my pocket until it's final.

Every pick here was posted before first pitch, and every pick gets graded after, same as the regular cards. If your side loses, the debate club meets again next season. Who won the debate? Tell us in the comments: Bev or Tommy.
